Geotechnical instrumentation use in landslides shows a continuous growth in the last decades. Field measurements (especially piezometers, inclinometers and total stations) play an increasing role in understanding the mechanism of landslides. Unfortunately, there are very few cases where instrumentation received the required consideration. Thus, in most landslides, field measurements tend to be more misleading than insightful. The aim of my research is to assess with greater certainty the stability of the slope with Geostatistics, a field of statistics involving quantities that vary in space, by using the field measurements as regionalized variables. Furthermore, the geostatistical tool can be used to redesign the instrumentation layout in order to improve the accuracy of the system and to produc! e more sophisticated alarm thresholds. |

The aim of the research is to propose and quantify, in a measurable and reproducible way, a methodology for the evaluation of the vulnerability of different elements at risk (buildings and infrastructures) exposed to landslide hazards of natural and anthropogenic nature. Hence, vulnerability indicators (in terms of permanent displacements, deformation, velocity, etc.) will be identified for all types of elements at risk in a cost-effective relevant, measurable and accurate way, analytically and statistically sound. More specifically, the present research is intended to propose specific vulnerability indicators for each element at risk, using the concept of probabilistic fragility functions and appropriate definition of relevant damage states. Experimental data and numerical models will be used to! define the appropriate fragility functions. The proposed specific fra gility functions and damage states for each element at risk will encompass and quantify various sources of uncertainties, related to the temporal probability and the probability of spatial impact of a specific slope failure or rock fall. In addition, specific case studies of environmental and societal impact of landslides will be examined. |

The PhD research concerns about the development of a hydro-mechanical model for fine grained unsaturated soils. The model is based in the pore size distribution (PSD) obtained by the mercury intrusion method (MIP). In this sense, the model will must be able to link changes in the micro structural level with the macroscopical mechanical and hydraulic behavior of the soil. We expect estimate soil water characteristic curve (SWCC), water and air permeability and volumetric deformable due changes of the tensional state. Later on, the model could be introduce in a geotechnical numerical software, in order to assist in the determination of some necessary parameters, like de SWCC and the hydraulic conductivity. Moreover, could be used to estimates the deformable behavior in some special cases, like settlements in soft soil due the construction of embankments. Finally, it would be possible to correlate the structure of a soil (measured by its PSD) with its strength, and so attempt to development a method to treat in limit equilibrium problems, like the analysis of slopes stability. |

My doctoral research is focused on the evaluation of a series of procedures (e.g. Newmark rigid-block, decoupled & coupled method) used to assess earthquake-induced deformations in landslides. A probabilistic Monte-Carlo approach is used to systematically assess the accuracy, applicability and reliability of a suite of deformation-based procedures used to predict seismically-induced deformations in slopes. An assessment of the predictive capabilities of each deformation-based method is made by comparing them to a database of well-documented case histories of actual seismically-induced landslides triggered in recent earthquake events. Although my research relies heavily on probabilistic techniques used in risk analysis, it does not explicitly consider or evaluate individual or collective landslide(s) hazard or risk. Instead a major goal of this work is to develop improved model! ing procedures and design methodologies used to evaluate seismic slope stability of landslides in practice. Moreover, the intent is to develop these recommendations in a context that would facilitate their adoption into individual or regional landslide hazard and risk assessment procedures used by practitioners and researchers. I am eager to learn about the topics presented at LARAM 2008 and excited at the possibility of applying these topics to meet the goals of my research. |
