ALERT Workshop 2026 - Session 3 " Geomechanics for Natural Hazards "

Coordinators: Sabatino Cuomo (University of Salerno, Italy), Diego Manzanal (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Spain), & Nadia Benahmed (INRAE, France)

30th September 2026, Aussois, France

The topics will span from slope instabilities, landslides and flows of debris/soil-water/ice mixtures up to failure of tailing dams and flow propagation problems. All such gravity-driven movements have been receiving increased attention in the contexts of risk assessment, early-warning systems, land-use and urban planning maps, also thanks to larger amount and quality of field evidence. However, issues like the incrementally non-linear behaviour of soil, hydro-mechanical coupling, weathering process, rate- and thermal effects come very often into the picture. In other words, geomechanics is fully needed to robustly address these so-called natural hazards.
The Workshop aims at establishing a link between scientists coming from both communities of ALERT Geomaterials and LARAM School. Contributions about classical small-strain approaches for cohesive soils, and more novel large-displacements approaches for slope failures evolving into flows, are both expected and welcome.
